HOW TO STAY EXTREMELY FIT AND HEALTHY AFTER 40. INTERVIEW WITH FITNESS ICON – OBI OBADIKE.
Obi Obadike doesn’t need an introduction to people from the fitness world. Famous because of his youthful look and sharp physique.
A former professional athlete who had to stop his career because of a hamstring injury and transitioned to a fitness icon who is a true inspiration for many.
We had the pleasure to have a word with Obi and asked him to share with our readers his secret tips for staying fit.
WHO IS OBI OBADIKE?
Health and wellness expert, entrepreneur, Telly Award Winning TV host, and best-selling author.
During his career, he had the pleasure to work with some of the biggest A-Lister Celebrities in the world and also had an opportunity to share his knowledge and write articles for some of the most prominent fitness magazines and top websites such as WebMD, Turner network, Bodybuilding.com, Muscle and Fitness, Sharecare.com and many others.
His performance and work were noticed and featured on Daytime talk shows such as The Today Show, Access Hollywood, Rachel Ray, Steve Harvey Show, Dr. Oz, and many others.
WHAT IS YOUR WORKOUT ROUTINE LIKE? DO YOU STILL SPRINT SOMETIMES?
My workout consists of super-setting circuit training routine where my body part-splits are the following:
Monday- Chest/Biceps- 10-12 reps
Tuesday- Legs/Triceps/Abs- 10-12 reps
Wednesday- Shoulders/Back- 10-12 reps
Thursday- Light/Easy Chest/Biceps/Abs- 10-12 reps
Friday- Light/Easy/Triceps/Abs- 10-12 reps
My cardio workout routine consists of 3 to 4 mile runs a couple of days a week at an 8-minute/mile pace and sprints twice a week.
I do all my cardio after weight-training because I want to exhaust or zap my energy.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU TRAIN YOUR ABS AND WHAT SORT OF EXERCISES DO YOU USE?
I train my abs two to three times a week.
I stick to basic exercises like:
- Leg Raises
- In and Outs
HOW DOES YOUR DIET LOOK LIKE? DO YOU EVER CHEAT?
I believe in the 80/20, 70/30 rule, where 70 to 80% I eat healthy and 20 to 30% I indulge in cheat meals.
My diet consists of Chicken, Turkey, Brown Rice, Sweet Potatoes, Broccoli, Spinach, Asparagus, Garden Salad, Unsalted Almonds, Oatmeal.
I eat the same foods over and over again, and I always say you can stick to these types of foods regularly, and will never go wrong.
WE KNOW THAT SEVERE HAMSTRING INJURY OUT YOU OFF COMPETING AS A PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE. WHAT WOULD YOU SUGGEST TO PREVENT INJURIES?
I was an elite track and field sprinter at Cal State Fullerton, and I had injuries that prevented me from reaching my full potential in that respective sport.
And yes, it was a hamstring injury, and what I realized was that I was prone to those types of injuries because there was an imbalance between my quad and hamstrings.
My quads were powerful but hamstrings not as much.
The imbalance between leg muscles leads to injuries, but also being inflexible does it too.
Based on my own experience, there are two things I would advise about.
One is to stretch regularly to maintain your flexibility.
Second is to make sure that you train all body parts evenly, so there are no strength imbalances between body parts.
YOU HAVE A VERY YOUTHFUL LOOK. COULD YOU SHARE WITH US YOUR SECRET SAUCE? DO YOU FOLLOW ANY SPECIFIC RULES THAT HELP YOU STAYING YOUNG AND HEALTHY? WHAT ABOUT YOUR SKINCARE?
I think that youthfulness stays away from things that can stress you out. Stress can age you.
I rarely drink alcohol, I’ve never smoked before, I’ve never done drugs, and I try to drink water regularly, and I believe all those things on top of decent genetics has helped me maintain my youth and still look like in my 20’s.
WHAT DOES MOTIVATE YOU AND HOW DO YOU STICK TO YOUR COMMITMENTS?
What motivates me is to be the best that I can be in my career and life.
I am always trying to improve every day as a person and in things that I am passionate about.
I try not to be one of those people that accepts mediocrity for myself.

After the success of the film, everybody was asking him about his new transformed body and how he achieved that.
Therefore responding to all people about that physique was so overwhelming so I told Morris :
”I think we should write a book on how to get back to shape again”.
The book is about a 12-week transformation and is filled with practical and useful content about home and gym exercises, diet plans and guidelines.
